Reader

The Sensemaker reader provides a distraction-free reading experience for articles, PDFs, and EPUBs.

Article Reader

Articles are rendered in a clean, focused layout:

  • Article title, source, author, and publication date
  • Reading time estimate
  • Full content with images and formatting preserved
  • Reading progress bar in the footer

Font Controls

Adjust the font size using the slider in the reader controls (range: 14-24pt). Your preference is saved across sessions.

Reading Progress

A progress indicator shows how far you've read. Sensemaker tracks your position automatically — close an article and come back later, and you'll pick up where you left off.

Progress is calculated using sentinel markers in the article content, so it reflects actual scroll position rather than time spent.

PDF Reader

Upload a PDF and open it from your Library. The PDF viewer supports:

  • Full document rendering with page navigation
  • Text selection for highlighting
  • Position-based annotations (bounding rectangles per page)
  • Reading progress tracking

EPUB Reader

Upload an EPUB and open it from your Library. The EPUB reader supports:

  • Chapter navigation via table of contents
  • Font size adjustment
  • Reading position persistence
  • Highlighting via CFI (Canonical Fragment Identifier) positioning

Highlighting in the Reader

Select text in any reader to create a highlight. A floating toolbar appears with:

  • Color picker — 6 colors (yellow, green, blue, purple, red, orange)
  • Note — Add an annotation
  • Tags — Attach tags to the highlight

The highlights sidebar (toggle via the button in the reader header) shows all highlights for the current article. Click any highlight to jump to its position.

For more on highlights, see Highlighting & Annotations.
